  This is a used elastomer testing machine made for testing the durability of various rubbers by exposing them to impacts, abrasion, motion with an embedded object, impacts on an angle, heat, or various combinations of these.  The machine was devolved for the US Army and Navy to perform analysis of tank track pad elastomer material to predict a projected service life.  The machine was custom designed and built by company in England and the overall construction is top notch.  Everything we know about unit was found from our observations and a 29 page government document that describes the machine. 

  The machine uses a tup (tool bit) to impinge the surface of the rubber sample in a variety of modes.  The downward press action comes from the knuckle press which moves a maximum of 15mm.  Press is actuated by a pneumatic cylinder which is controlled with the valving in a combination of ways.  The rubber sample is held in a heated sample holder which can rotate, ocsilate or tilt depending on the test mode.  Due to the fact that sample holder can rotate, there is a slip ring system for the thermocouples and sample holder heater.  Entire sample holder and stage can pneumatically oscillate left and right 2".  Stage movement is induced by a pneumatic cylinder and velocity of each direction can be selected with the knobs on the control panel.

The testing modes are as follows:

  • Vertical impact, Stationary mode - platen stays stationary, press acuates and impacts rubber a single time or repetitivly
    • Single or continuous impact
    • May be used in conjunction with tilting the stage (tilt up to 30 degrees)
  • Rotational:
    • The tool (blade) is embedded in the sample then the table rotates at a frequency set by the operator
    • The tool (blade) could also impact repeatedly as the sample rotates
    • 3 rev/sec max
  • Linear modes:
    • Requires its own 80 psi air supply (separate from press)
    • Linear mode 1:
      • The platform moves linearly back and forth in a horizontal plane at a set rate while the tool is touching or embedded in the sample
      • Travel: 2" max
    • Linear mode 2:
      • Same as linear mode 1 except the embedded tool can be raised during the return cycle of the stage, then impacting on the beginning of the next cycle. This process repeats automatically.

  This is a very specialized custom built testing machine that has a large variety of operating modes that would require a large investment to reproduce.  Even if the machine is not utilized to its fullest potential it may be the solution to your rubber  testing requirements.  Please remember that this was a custom built macine that will most likely have no support by the manufacturer but most of the components could be replaced with other off-the-shelf components if necessary.   The machine is in very good condition and most of the functions have been tested.  Other than one or two sticky pnematic valves that should be addressed, the machine is in very good used condition.  See the test video for more information.
