Superpave shear tester was developed by the Strategic Highway Research Program to characterize the hot-mix asphalt mixture in a laboratory. The shear tester is a closed-loop, servo-hydraulic system that can load samples in two axis along with providing a confining pressure required for some tests. The system consists of four main parts, the frame, computer, hydraulic system and environmental chamber (which is not included). The two main parts of the loading frame are the reaction frame and shear table. The reaction frame provides the structure for the machine along with doubling as the confining chamber once the sleeve is in the lowered position.  Shear table is acted upon by the horizontal actuator to provide a shear force on the sample. Vertical load, shear and confining pressure can all be applied at the same time in multiple manners such as statically, ramping or repetitively and in various wave shapes thanks to the servo hydraulic actuators. Various LVDTs sensors are affixed to the sample to monitor axial, shear or radial deformation. The hydraulic power for the actuators comes from the 10 GPM hydraulic supply that features a separate circulation pump along with cooling heat exchanger. In order to maintain an exact testing temperature a separate environmental chamber is positioned next to the shear tester and temperature conditioned air is ducted into the shear tester (environmental chamber not included).

 All of the control elements of the superpave tester pass through the computer. The software in the computer offers a comprehensive solution to controlling the closed-loop control system along with providing templates for testing some of the following tests. Some of the tests below may require custom settings in the program.

This particular machine was removed from a national laboratory and is in good operating condition. This is a very specialized machine with complex controls but we were successfully able to perform some testing functions to prove the machines condition even though we are not trained in asphalt testing. Please see the test video for a quick demonstration of the machine. The test we performed on the machine is as follows:

We turned on the hydraulic supply from either the hand pendant or the control software.  Once the hydraulics are on the pressure sleeve can be lowered if the test requires. Then the proper test type can be selected in the software. The tests can be performed with the stock parameters or custom values can be selected such as changing the frequency or force of the actuators. Once a test is started all of the data is displayed on the screen such as force, displacement, stress, strain, etc. There is also the ability to record a number of external LVDTs that can be affixed the sample in various different manners.

The main structure of the machine is heavy duty and very well built. The actuators both work well along with the hydraulic supply. The computer is an older industrial computer but it boots up and works well. The software is very impressive and comprehensive. From our research it appears that this Superpave Shear Tester was a complex  tester that could perform many different tests but since it was so expensive only very large agencies could afford them. This prompted simpler less capable machines to be developed such as the Simple Performance Test (SPT), duplicate shear test (DST), field shield test (FST) and  single axis servo-hydraulic universal testing machines. This is a great opportunity for a research facility, university or laboratory to own a very diverse expensive asphalt testing machine at at fraction of the original price. All of the original manuals are included. Also included is the special press that is used to hold the platens on the samples while they are glued.
