This is a used vertical glass lathe in excellent operating condition.  Machine features a stationary lower headstock, traversing upper tailstock and traversing torch carriage.  Upper spindle has dual chucks for holding tubes inside of sleeve tube.  Chuck rotation, carriage and upper spindle are powered by servo motors and programmable from the free standing control console.  Machine is in excellent condition and most functions have been verified to be operational. Please view the test video for a more in depth description of the machine functionality.

Upper and lower chucks are protected from the process by liquid cooling plates and nitrogen purge nozzles.  The onboard gas distribution panel controls the flow of gas to the purge nozzles as well as the oxygen and hydrogen to the torch.  Torch also features nitrogen purging fixtures mounted on either side of the torch.  The gas panel contains the control solenoids as well as mass flow controllers for the hydrogen and oxygen.

Control cabinet is a free standing rack mount frame that contains the contactors, power supplies, servo amplifiers, PLC and touch screen controller.  The touch screen is very simply to setup and use.  The main function of the machine is to move the torch(carriage) up and down the glass as the chucks spin.  The speed, distance and number of passes are all controlled by the touch screen and PLC.  The amount of oxygen and oxygen-to-hydrogen ratio is also controlled on the screen.  The upper tailstock can also be set to slowly raise upward.

The carriage can operate in the “controlled” manner  by selecting  the number of passes and traverse speed or it can operate uncontrolled at a faster speed and for an indefinite number of passes.  In controlled mode the speed at which the torch traverses can be selected in mm/min.  The amount of passes can be selected as well as the time the torch pauses at the end of each stroke.  Chuck rotational speed can be set up to 75 RPM.

This machine was used by a major fiber optic company and is in excellent condition.  We downloaded the PLC program to a PC and saved to a disc just so if anything ever happened to the PLC the program could be installed on a replacement PLC for minimum downtime.  Vertical glass lathes are sometimes used for stretching preforms, sleeving, sweating on tubing in a over-collapse or cladding process, consolidation, sintering and drying.  We also have a fully automated horizontal preform glass lathe as well.
