Horizontal glass preform lathe with automated controls and gas distribution cabinet.  This system consists of a Litton horizontal lathe with servo driven carriage and tailstock, gas distribution cabinet for up to 7 different gases and control cabinet.  System could be used for making fiber preforms using the MCVD process.   The lathe is made by Litton and the entire system was made by Nextrom.  

Unit was powered up and most of the lathe functions were tested as can be seen in the video.  Spindle speed is easily adjusted with the ten-turn pot on the control panel.  Tailstock can be moved manually with the crank wheel or automatically with the control system.   The Litton controllers can be used directly by starting and stopping functions on their touch screen panel or some functions are integrated into the control panel push-buttons and speed pots.  The tailstock can be set to traverse back and forth with the Litton controller or it can be set to “stretch” in just one direction using the tailstock selector switch on the control panel.  The carriage is operated in a similar manner where the traversing can be controlled with either the Litton controller or with the control panel push-buttons and pots. 

The gas control cabinet accurately distributes the proper quantity of gases to the process.  There are many regulators, solenoids and mass flow controllers in the front of the cabinet while the electrical components are located in the back.  There is a "bubbler" box on the right side of the cabinet which houses two Lauda temperature controlled baths for the SiCL4, GeCL and POCL3.  The stainless cabinet on the right of the main cabinet is for the boron tribromide components.  An Opto 22 PLC system controls all of the components but a new computer program will be required to run the gas supply process.  The current PLC racks can be used and newer drop-in replacement "brains" can be installed on each rack enabling the use of current interface software.  

Overall the system is in excellent condition and is built to the highest standards.  There are many boxes of parts, brackets, tubing, hoses and extra components.  A manual is not included although Nextrom told us the documents are available from them.
