This is a 4 station ball & rod wear tester that consist of four stations each one of which include a Helm Instrument vibration monitor, mdl 800 MV-20 controller. There is also an Oil-Rite oil tank mounted to the rear upper frame of the stand for dripping oil onto the specimen under test. An accelerometer mfg by Columbia, mdl 3026 is positioned above each of the stations which also include an hour meter. The vibration monitor is preset to a particular vibration level and once the ball and rod become damaged enough to cross the vibration setpoint the controller turns off the motor. The machine was tested and the motors sound good and the setpoint controllers properly shut-off the motors when the vibration threshold is reached.
From the manual:
The ball/rod RCF tester consists of a rotating cylindrical test specimen alternately stressed by rolling contact fatigue with three radially loaded balls. The balls are radially loaded against the specimen by two tapered bearing cups which are thrust loaded by three compression springs.
This machine was built to perform the tests listed in ASTM STP771.
