This is an Asian Japanese palanquin sedan chair which has had its upper carrying beam removed. The beam was attached to the top of the case using a steel rod suspension frame in the interior which supported the chair while being carried with the beam. The beam was probably 10-12 feet long making the handling and transportation of this chair very impractical. The one dragon head which is detached can be easily re-attached. It was purchased 50 years ago in LA from an antique dealer.
