This is a used 15 foot fiber optic drawing tower. Machine is used to make optic fibers by precisely melting a glass preform that is chucked at the top of the tower and letting the molten glass stretch into a thin fiber as it falls downward. There can be a variety of accessories bolted to the tower depending on the application. The control system is obviously older but the frame and mechanical components are in excellent condition. The machine could be upgraded to newer controls, or it could be used with the current older controls. There are some photos of when the unit was still assembled and there are some pictures of it disassembled.
What is included in this sale is mostly the "main" tower structure and the user would add their own coater, furnace, diameter measurement system and other accessories. The main components that are included here are the main frame, preform feed mechanism, take-up drum and control cabinet. The preform feed system is a servo controlled mechanism that moves the glass preform downward into the furnace (not included). There is also a manual x-y position stage that precisely aligns the perform. The tower itself is constructed of heavy steel rectangular tubes that are welded into two very sturdy sections. The lower section houses a vertical "slide" which allows mounted accessories to be more easily positioned vertically. Take up drum is a separate item that can be mounted on the base of the tower. The control console houses the rack mounted controllers for the different accessories.
As mentioned earlier this machine is older, but the frame is in excellent condition and is ready to be upgraded with modern controls and systems. The original manual is included. We have a horizontal preform lathe and a vertical cladding lathe available as well.
